Fueling the future: a product-driven website redesign

Ballard Power Systems, a global leader in zero-emission fuel cell technology, sought to transition from a research-focused website to promoting the commercialization of its road-proven products. Red Rocket Creative led the design strategy and user experience overhaul, transforming the site into a streamlined, user-centric platform that reinforced its market position as the force in fuel cell technology.

Red Rocket Creative was responsible for the entire project, managing the collaboration with Blender Media, which was contracted for the site programming. The result was a high-performance website design that was successfully delivered.

Simplifying the navigation for clarity and efficiency

We streamlined Ballard’s 100+ page website into a 35-page experience, creating a navigation system tailored to its unique audiences. The primary menu, designed for buyers like engineers and fleet managers, features a mega menu that simplifies the product discovery process. Users can browse by product family, such as stacks and modules, or by specific application use cases, making it easier to find the right solution.

For secondary audiences like investors, we centralized key information into a dedicated section with a comprehensive document library. This approach reduced redundancy and made critical resources simple to access. By focusing on audience needs, the new navigation ensures a seamless and efficient user experience.

Speaking the user’s language

A major focus of the redesign was ensuring the language was straightforward and approachable. We replaced technical jargon with simple terms, making product details and benefits clear and understandable.

Headlines and calls-to-action were rewritten with action-oriented language, such as “Explore Applications” or “Ask a Fuel Cell Expert,” encouraging engagement while guiding users effortlessly through the site. This shift in communication not only improved usability but also aligned Ballard’s recently updated messaging with the needs of its diverse audiences.

Developing an intuitive product finder

To simplify decision-making and enhance usability, we designed a product finder tailored to Ballard’s offerings and audience needs. The tool features a clean interface organized by product details, specifications, and applications in a structured, easily navigable format.

Thoughtfully designed filters and search criteria allow users to quickly find the right solution, reducing friction and streamlining the exploration process.

Enhancing product display and information accessibility

We streamlined and standardized product imagery, ensuring visual consistency across the site to elevate the presentation of Ballard’s innovations. Each product page was thoughtfully designed with a clear information hierarchy, highlighting key features while maintaining an intuitive layout.

We implemented contextual linking to related applications, FAQs, and support resources, creating a seamless user flow that enabled users to explore products holistically. By reducing cognitive load and simplifying navigation, we enhanced accessibility, thus ensuring users could easily find the information they needed while staying engaged with Ballard’s cutting-edge solutions.

Bringing Ballard’s brand to life 

To create a more engaging and user-friendly experience, we integrated dynamic visuals and interactive elements that aligned with Ballard’s innovative brand. Gradient animations, inspired by the electron exchange in fuel cells, add a sense of movement and energy. This is exemplified on the homepage, which features a responsive motion cursor and rotating carousels that guide users across the page, making content more accessible and compelling.

Blender Media’s collaboration on this project ensured a seamless development process that brought these creative solutions to life. By prioritizing both visual impact and user experience, Red Rocket Creative transformed Ballard’s website into a platform that effectively communicates their market-ready solutions while offering a seamless and immersive journey.
